This is an imaginary historical portrait that was painted as an illustration for Arthur Doughty's book "Daughter of New France", published in 1916. The portrait brings to mind the story of the courageous fourteen year-old girl who in October 1692, defended her home, the Seigneury and Fort of Verchères on the St. Lawrence River, from an Iroquois attack.
